Position on major issues

Criminal justice and policing

I will strongly advocate for legislation which increases civil and criminal penalties for abuse by contractors, insurance companies, and fraudulent homeowners.

Education

Currently, property insurance costs are out of control, the cost of living keeps climbing, and our natural lands and clean water systems urgently need protection. We continue to see unprecedented growth affecting our infrastructure and many of our neighbors are without quality and affordable healthcare. We are failing our students, parents, and teachers and voting rights are increasingly under attack. Our home rule prerogatives have been usurped in Tallahassee, taking from the people in Sarasota-Manatee control of their own destiny.

We are failing too many of our students, teachers, and parents through the way we currently approach both K–12 education and higher education. At the same time, Florida has made meaningful progress in expanding career and technical education. We should continue building on that progress by creating more opportunities for students to gain practical skills, earn valuable credentials, and prepare for good-paying careers, whether they choose to enter the workforce, attend college, or pursue both.

Elections and voting

The right to vote is one of the fundamental principles upon which our country was founded. It is how the people exercise their inherent political power and make their voices heard. No eligible Floridian should face unnecessary barriers to participating in our democracy. Polling locations should be safe and accessible, and voting by mail should be available to every eligible voter who requests it.

Our district's natural environment is not only part of what makes our community beautiful, it supports our economy, protects our quality of life, and sustains the waterways, beaches, and wildlife that define this region. We have seen the consequences of delayed investment in wastewater infrastructure and the damage that nutrient pollution can cause to our bays and waterways. Florida must make long-term investments in clean water, modern infrastructure, and the protection of our natural lands. We must also ensure that growth is planned responsibly and does not come at the expense of the communities we love.

Our healthcare system does not come close to meeting its full potential. Too often, healthcare decisions are driven by price gouging, corporate interests, and political motivations rather than by what patients need. I believe every person has the right to access the high-quality, affordable care they need. As your senator, I will work to make healthcare pricing more transparent and accountable, protect the right of patients and doctors to make healthcare decisions together, and build the broad coalition needed to make universal healthcare a reality.

Florida now has some of the highest property insurance costs in America and the pain this causes our neighbors demands immediate action. We can stabilize the property insurance market, when we: harden homes against storm damage; strengthen building codes and state funded mitigation retrofits; build systems for rigorous oversight of insurance companies, rate manipulation, and their accountability; and reduce reinsurance costs through a Public Catastrophe Layer. I intend on implementing these changes from day one.

Infrastructure and transportation

Local control

We know what it is like when state government plays political chess with our local autonomy. Year-over-year reductions in local revenue (sometimes imposed with little or no advance notice) put our schools, our roads, our public safety, and the essential services our communities depend on at risk. Amendment 3, which will appear on the November ballot, would amend the Florida Constitution and place new limits on how counties and municipalities can use property-tax revenue. Disguised as "tax relief," this amendment could undermine the financial stability of our local governments and weaken the services that keep our communities safe and functioning. Similar proposals did not pass the Florida Legislature this year. As your senator, I will work to protect local control, defend the ability of communities to make decisions that reflect their own needs, and serve as an independent check on the Governor's power. We cannot allow harmful policies to be imposed on our communities without meaningful input from the people who live here.
