Position on major issues

Civil rights and freedoms

One of the roles I take most seriously in Congress is the opportunity to be a voice for the voiceless. Far too often, throughout the world and inside the United States, people are discriminated against because of their beliefs, religion, gender or ethnicity.

Criminal justice and policing

In order to keep our community safe, I'm working to support our local law enforcement and provide local community organizations with the support they need to fight crime, prevent domestic terrorism, reduce drug abuse, help those struggling with mental illness, stop domestic violence and more.

Economy, jobs and wages

Whether it’s ending reckless tariffs driving up the price of groceries, using antitrust laws to break up the corporate consolidation that is squeezing consumers at every turn, or expanding access to capital for small and minority-owned businesses that have been locked out of economic opportunity for too long — James is laser focused on the cost of living crisis hitting working families, small businesses, and retirees on fixed incomes across the Treasure Coast and Northern Palm Beaches.

James is laser focused on the economy and cost of living to put more money in the pockets of hardworking Floridians. From curbing chaotic tariffs, to combatting skyrocketing property insurance, ending the clean water crisis, and lowering healthcare costs, James is running to make the economy work better for everyone — Republicans, Democrats, and Independents alike.

Elections and voting

James is committed to getting big money out of politics, banning members of Congress from trading stocks and making bets on insider information, and closing the revolving door between Capitol Hill and the K Street lobbying corridor.

Ban individual stock trading, trading crypto currency, or participating in speculative betting markets by the President, Vice President, Members of Congress, Executive Branch appointees, Supreme Court Justices, and their immediate family members. Lifetime Ban on serving as registered lobbyists for Members of Congress and their immediate family members. Ban on accepting personal gifts of more than $20 by the President, Vice President, Members of Congress, Executive Branch appointees, and Supreme Court Justices. Constitutional Amendment overturning the Citizens United decision, banning the unlimited spending of dark money by corporations and individuals.

Environment and climate

James’ path to public service in the U.S. Coast Guard started with a deep love of wild Florida — particularly its water. In Congress, he will relentlessly seek to end the Treasure Coast’s clean water crisis. That means completing Everglades restoration, cleaning up Lake Okeechobee, stopping toxic discharges to the St. Lucie Estuary and Indian River Lagoon, and never compromising or curtailing bedrock environmental laws.

jamesmartinforflorida.com ·

Our community has felt the social and economic consequences of environmental disaster firsthand. The water issues stemming from Lake Okeechobee exemplify why it's absolutely critical that we work together to strengthen conservation programs.

mast.house.gov ·

Cleaning the water in our community is a non-negotiable priority. These waterways are irreplaceable treasures, central to the economy and quality of life in our region.

mast.house.gov ·

As a member of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, my top priority is completing the projects affecting the Indian River Lagoon and our beaches.

Government reform

“In Florida’s 21st District, people work hard, play by the rules, and expect their leaders to serve with integrity not cater to the wealthy few,” said James Martin. “Members of Congress are not above the people they serve. Public service comes with responsibility, not special privileges. If we want to end corruption and restore trust in our government, then we must end insider privilege and put the public first. I welcome every candidate, including Brian Mast, in this race to join me in taking this pledge.”

jamesmartinforflorida.com ·

Healthcare

James believes healthcare is a human right — but he also believes that if you like the coverage your union or your employer provides, you should keep it. That’s why he supports a public option: a pathway to quality, affordable healthcare for every American who wants it, without taking away what’s already working for millions of families. He’ll also take on the pharmaceutical middlemen and pharmacy benefit managers that drive up costs while delivering nothing but profit to themselves.

jamesmartinforflorida.com ·

He will never vote to cut Social Security, Medicare, or veterans’ benefits. That means opposing any effort to raise the retirement age, privatize Social Security, or gut the Department of Veteran’s Affairs under the guise of reform.

jamesmartinforflorida.com ·

One of my top priorities in Congress is protecting Medicare and Social Security for today’s seniors and for future generations. When the federal government created these programs, it made a commitment to America’s seniors, and it’s a commitment that must be upheld.

mast.house.gov ·

The rising costs of healthcare have prevented families from seeking the care that they need and a new maze of bureaucracy has led to less choice for American families.

mast.house.gov ·

The ongoing opioid crisis in America is a national tragedy, and the problem is only getting worse. In recent years, the number of opioid-related deaths has skyrocketed, and the number of overdose deaths are on the rise. Congress has taken some action to combat this epidemic, but we must do more to build on our progress.

Immigration

James knows better than most what it takes to secure America’s borders — he spent years in the U.S. Coast Guard protecting America’s maritime border. Like most Americans, he believes we need to overhaul the immigration system: one that is safe, fair, transparent, and humane. That means investing in immigration judges to clear asylum backlogs, ending the use of immigration enforcement as a political weapon, creating a workable path to legal status for long-term residents who’ve built their lives here, and fixing a broken visa system that leaves families waiting decades.

jamesmartinforflorida.com ·

There is no question that our immigration system is broken, and for far too long, Congress has ignored its responsibility to fix the problem. The time has come for Congress to lead on this issue.

Infrastructure and transportation

As a member of the Transportation & Infrastructure Committee, my top priority is completing the projects affecting the Indian River Lagoon and our beaches.

mast.house.gov ·

National security and foreign policy

Having served in combat operations in Afghanistan, I learned firsthand how the United States’ retreat from a leadership role in the international community has set the world on a dangerous course that threatens our national security.

mast.house.gov ·

We cannot allow the defense of our ally Israel to be an issue of right versus left. For me, and for all freedom-loving Americans, standing with Israel—for democracy and human rights—will always be an issue of right versus wrong.

Taxes and government spending

Washington’s spending habits are completely out of control. These high levels of debt are simply unsustainable and will limit economic opportunities for future generations of Floridians if not addressed.

Other statements

James is also committed to quarterly town halls with constituents, bi-annual round tables with local elected officials and business leaders across the Treasure Coast, and he will make his schedule publicly available.

jamesmartinforflorida.com ·

For far too long, your taxpayer dollars have been used to fund gruesome and unnecessary experiments on animals. The federal government’s misuse of taxpayer dollars to fund these outdated, often deadly experiments must stop.
